Blogging Music For Media Productions

April 28, 2009

I blog music for media productions. Making music for media productions is great and blogging my work in this niche seems like  uncharted territory. One job that I’ve recently been requested to do is making the theme music to a podcaster’s show. It was something that I never actually thought to do before. But I think its going to be a lot of fun.

Speaking of podcasters, Ty Cohen and Jawar, two publishers and music business consultants who host the Motivational Music Radio Show recently discussed the possibilities of marketing music on the internet saying,

“Social media is a powerful tool in attracting an audience for practically anything under the sun,” says Cohen. “Everyone is part of some online community or another and artists should take advantage of this trend to get their music appreciated.” (The Open Press)

But the social media malaise has become a bit sloppy and seems like a free for all. And if musicians are not careful they can easily end up spending more time circling the Internet to find an audience than MAKING and SELLING good music.

So I am asking musicians not only to think about using social media like Twitter and Facebook, but to think about HOW and WHY you should use them. Because, these powerful Web 2.0 applications can quickly lead to time wasted. If social media does not fit well in your promotion and marketing strategy perhaps its time to re-evaluate your strategy.

There are a number of consultants to help with this, such as Andrew Dubber (@dubber) of New Music Strategies.

Hey Mike! Thanks for stopping by, I will check out your blog and see what you’ve got going on. As for “circling the Internet”, if its working for ya keep circling. But if its counter productive… watch out man…!
